The fundamentals of History of medieval art, from IVth cent. to XVth cent., with un introduction to different problems of style, iconography and meanings in the historical and architectonical context.

Learning Objectives
The purpose is to supply a fundamental knowledge of the topic and problems of the History of medieval art in Italy.
Prerequisites
A knowledge of basic rudiments of medieval history.
Teaching Methods
The class is supported by projection of images of monuments and works of art that are objet of discussion. The class is followed by some visit to church and museum.
Further information
The pictures showed in the class are available as pdf in the e-learning platform, in the University of Florence website. A visit to museums and churches of Pisa and Siena is scheduled for two days on January. The teacher sees the students any Wednesday between 1pm and 7pm, in his room (via Gino Capponi 9).
Type of Assessment
The examination consist in an oral interrogation. The student must recognize and comment the pictures showed.

3. The revival of ancient art.
4. The social position of the artist in the Middle Age and the image of the power.
5. Architectural spaces and decoration: the iconographic programs, the decorative systems and the illusionistic value.
6. Technic and style, conservation and restoration.
7. Methodological topic: the material analysis, the context rendering.
8. The crisis of the classical naturalism between late antiquity and early Christian age.
9. Ravenna, the Giustinian age and the genesis of the byzantine art.
10. Le barbarian invasions, the art under the Longobard and the Carolingian renovatio.
11. The rebirth of the 1000th a.C.
12. Romanesque art in Europe and in north Italy.
13. The south Italy and the Sicily under the Normand, XI-XIIth cent.
14. Venice in the XI-XIIIth cent. between East and West.
15. Architecture, Sculpture and Painting in Tuscany in Romanesque age.
