The first part of the course aims at providing the students with basic notions of Greek literary history from the 3rd c. BCE onwards; of ancient allegorical exegesis; of textual criticism and editorial technique. In the second part, one or more Greek literary works will be read in the original text and analyzed throughout.

Learning Objectives
Knowledge of the cultural history of the Hellenistic age; of the evolution of Greek post-classical literature; of Jewish Greek literature. Knowledge of the development of allegorical exegesis in the Greek-speaking world. Acquiring notions of textual transmission, textual criticism, and editorial technique, with special focus on both the LXX and the New Testament.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Greek language in its basic form as usually taught in both high school and first steps at the University (i.e. Attic dialect and koinè); better with basic knowledge of history of Greek Literature and Judaic history
Teaching Methods
Traditional lectures, including translation of Greek texts and commenting on them; frequent practice of translation from Greek by the students; if possible, seminar-like exercitations by the students themselves.
Further information
At the final examination, a correct and fluent metrical reading of poetical texts is required. Dr Magnelli will be glad to provide all the help the students may need, and to assist them in checking their progress from time to time.
Type of Assessment
Questions, discussion and exercitations from time to time during the class; oral examination at the end, aiming to test the student’s competence in both Greek language and literary, historical, cultural aspects of the ancient texts.

(a) Struttura del corso
• L’evoluzione della letteratura in lingua greca nell’Ellenismo, con particolare attenzione per le problematiche interculturali e per lo sviluppo della letteratura giudaico-ellenistica.
• Le origini dell’esegesi allegorica nel mondo greco e il suo sviluppo dall’età ellenistica al Neoplatonismo.
• Nozioni di trasmissione testuale, di critica del testo e di ecdotica dei testi greci, con particolare attenzione per i problemi metodologici connessi all’edizione dei LXX.
(b) Programma di esame
(i) Si richiede una buona conoscenza della storia della letteratura greca dall’inizio dell’età ellenistica al Neoplatonismo.
Si raccomanda di prestare particolare attenzione ai seguenti autori: Polibio, Diodoro Siculo, Filone Alessandrino, l’anonimo Sul Sublime, Giuseppe Flavio, Plutarco, Luciano, l’Atticismo, lo pseudo-Focilide, i Neoplatonici (quantomeno Plotino, Porfirio, Giamblico).
Si consiglia l’uso di A. Lesky, Storia della letteratura greca, III, trad. it., Milano, Il Saggiatore 1962 (e successive ristampe; ultima ed. riveduta 2005); oppure di un buon manuale liceale, ad es.
