The course intends to analyse then main positions of the Roman Catholic culture in front of the new meanings that the concepts of "homeland" and "nation" take on from the end of the eighteenth to the end of the twentieth century.

Learning Objectives
The course intends to make the students know a critical knowledge of the relationships between Churches and power in Modern and Contemporary age. It also intends to increase students' competency to read an historical-religious source in a critical way, by contestualizing it in the short, middle and long period.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of world History and of History of Catholic Church and culture in the modern and contemporary age.

Type of Assessment
Written report on a source in the which each student has to show he knows the principal elements given by the teacher during the lectures. The teacher also gives a scheme to help student to write the report with the questions they have to face. She also suggests two books in the bibliography in the which students can find most of the elements to contetualizing the source and the questions it raises.
Course program
The course intends to analyse then main positions of the Roman Catholic culture in front of the new meanings that the concepts of "homeland" and "nation" take on from the end of the eighteenth to the end of the twentieth century. It devotes a special attention to some topics: Italian "Risorgimento", the two World wars, the totalitarian regime, the relationships between political violence, religion and national identity in Ulster in modern and contemporary age.
