Main goals:
-Provide the students with the necessary information concerning method of analysis of archaeological materials in order to carry out independently a research topic in the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
-Provide the students with the chronological and geographic frame for the Archaeology of the ancient Near East, emphasizing issues and current research topics.
-Investigate the relationships among political entities, group identity and material culture during the second Millennium BC in Syria and Anatolia.
-Point out specific research topics on material culture
-Encourage discussion and critical Approach

1. Short introduction: a. the second Millennium BC in Mesopotamia, Syria and Anatolia: historical and archaeological frame; b. Methods for an iconographic Analysis in the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
2. Main Topic: iconography of deities and demons during the Second Millennium BC. The three geographic areas of Mesopotamia, the Levant and Anatolia present during the Middle and Late bronze Ages a rich and multifaceted iconography on Religion and cultual activities. The class will analyse main themes and Topics related to the divine and mithological sphere; their archaeological context, meterials, style, iconography and theme will be analysed. The theme in particular will be also confronted with the information from textual sources.
3. Apllication: the group will try to identifiy iconographical themes common in the whole area and their influence in the Greek and Etruscan world.
