The course provides an analysis of the birth of philology in the modern world, with particular attention to the debates that led to the birth of the modern philology. The second part of the course: Dante’s Epistle to Cangrande della Scala.

The second part of the course aims to analyze Dante’s Epistola to Cangrande della Scala and to present many problems of this texts. Through a careful discussion of this letter it is intended to bring to light the exegetical ideas contained therein about the correct interpretation of the Commedia. The course will be dedicated also to show the success of the Epistola immediately after the death of Dante and then in the modern era
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Latin and the basics of the text edition.
Teaching Methods
The lessons are of a frontal character; Also provide for a single seminar work.
Several visits to libraries are scheduled to analyze the materials needed for critical editions.
