Course program
The formal structures of medieval Romance poetry: origins, features, developments.
The roots of modern poetry go back to the Middle Ages. It was with the emergence of the Romance languages that formal structures and performance habits destined to persist for many centuries were formed and perfected: syllabic versification, rhyme, the architecture of single genres, the ways in which they were transmitted, performed, and enjoyed. Through direct analysis of representative works, the course aims to reconstruct the framework and history of the formal structures of Romance poetry, from its origins to the 14th century.
The course will be organised as follows:
First part:
1) Genres of Romance poetry
2) Versification
3) Formal genres
4) Metrics and textual criticism
Second part:
5) Formal structures and intertextuality: case studies from the early troubadours to Petrarch
6) Seminar activities: philological, linguistic and literary analysis of a selection of texts.
