Learning Objectives
The course is a general introduction to the main periods, currents and authors of Scandinavian literatures in the 20th century and up to present time. The aims are: to provide a solid, basic knowledge of the main currents, authors and genres in Scandinavian literature; to gain an in-depth knowledge of a good number of literary works pertaining to this literary tradition; to make the knowledge of the basics of literary theory more sound, so as to enable students to purse independent close reading.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required as for the knowledge of Scandinavian literature, if the students are attending their second academic year at BA-level; if the students are attending their third year, this will be their second course in Scandinavian Literary History, after last year’s course (from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century). The course is offered to students who have a basic knowledge of Scandinavian languages. Literary texts will be however mainly read and analysed in Italian translation.
Teaching Methods
The literature lectures will, especially in the latter part of the course, open up to a more active, voluntary participation of the students, who can prepare some of the texts as homework and present and discuss them in class. The part of the syllabus that has been thus prepared does not need to be included in the final oral exam.
Further information
The course of Nordic Literature takes place in the first semester (6 hours weekly for 12 weeks; 72 hours in all). Examinations will take place starting from January and February 2017.
Type of Assessment
The final exam is oral and gives 12 ECTS. Questions about literary history as well as questions concerning the themes and poetics of the authors will be discussed. Works included in the syllabus are analysed through chosen passages and close reading. The exam takes approximately 30 minutes.
