Giuseppe Ungaretti and the italian poetry.
The course aims at offering an overview of Italian poetry in the twentieth century, with a focus on analyzing the Unagaretti’s works, from L’Allegria to La Terra Promessa.

The student must prove knowledge of the most prominent magazines of the twentieth century («La Voce», «Lacerba», «Solaria», «Il Politecnico», «Menabò», «Officina», «Il Verri»), of the selected works by the main poets (Corazzini, Gozzano, Palazzeschi, Sbarbaro, Campana, Montale, Caproni, Luzi, Sereni, Pasolini, Zanzotto, i “Novissimi” [Pagliarani, Sanguineti]), and main writers (Gadda, Moravia, Calvino, Volponi).

Learning Objectives
The course aims at offering a basic preparation on modern and contemporary Italian literature, with knowledge of the main authors (poets and writers) and of the most prominent magazines of the time, in addition to a special focus on the poetry, its theoretical definition and its development in Italy during the twentieth century. This includes the acquisition of competence related to the study of literary currents, both in their historical evolution and in terms of the critical interpretation of a text.

General overview of Italian history, literary movements and main authors in the twentieth century.

Lectures referring to documents, works, texts, critical and theoretical essays analyzed during the course

The course is worth 12 CFU (72 hours of lessons). Please note that students must take part in at least 2/3 of the lessons
Type of Assessment
There will be an oral exam carried out in two phases: the first aims at verifying the
knowledge of modern and contemporary Italian literature, with questions on the
authors (writers and poets) and on the magazines mentioned in the program. The
second phase will focus on the monographic subject treated during the course (Giuseppe Ungaretti and the italian poetry).
It is mandatory to show proficiency in all areas to pass the exam.
The final evaluation will be made up of the single evaluations in the different phases.
Course program
GIUSEPPE UNGARETTI AND THE ITALIAN POETRY
The course is divided into two parts, a “monographic” and an “introductory” one. The introductory part aims at offering an overview of Italian literature in the twentieth century, referring to the most prominent magazines, writers and poets of the time. The monographic part will focus on analyzing the Unagaretti’s works, from L’Allegria to La Terra Promessa.
