The course provides an introduction to the system of hieroglyphic writing and to the language written during the Middle and New Kingdoms. The main objective is that the students will be able to learn how to read and to translate a text, under the teacher's guidance, examining and understanding the sentence construction and improving their analytic judgement.

None; students are invited to review grammar terminology before beginning the course.

Type of Assessment
Oral examination: reading, translation and grammatical explanation of a short text, already examined during the lessons. The examination aims at checking the students' learning skills and making judgements.
Course program
Hieroglyphic writing: ideograms/logograms, phonetic signs, classifiers. Rudiments of Middle-Egyptian grammar: nouns, pronouns, adjectives. Nominal sentences. Verbal and pseudo-verbal sentence. The Perfect. Active and passive SDm.f . Reading of a text in hieroglyphic writing, which the students themselves may choose, of course among those suggested by the teacher.
