Course Content
The course introduces to the study of the Hittite civilization (II millennium BC) through the analysis of the sources concerning history, culture and society
After a general intoroduction (16 hours), the course provides the necessary tools for the analysis of Hittite texts: grammar and syntax of the Hittite language, basic knowledge of the cuneiform script.

Learning Objectives
Knowledge and understanding: Acquisition of the necessary tools for the research on written sources and historical reconstruction of the Hittite civilization;
Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to correctly understand the written sources, and analyse text structure and grammar in order to get a proper translation.

Lessons, partecipation of the students with exercises and analysis of scientific articles

Type of Assessment
The exam is oral and aims to verify the understanding and mastery of the field and the ability to critically re-elaborate contents of different nature. The learning phases of grammar and cuneiform will be verified and assisted with exercises during the lessons. All students who attend classes must participate.
During the oral examination will be asked questions related to what studied on the manuals indicated in the bibliography and what explained during the lessons. A part will be devoted to the reading of the written sources with translation and grammar commentary of texts read during the lessons.
Course program
Introduction to the history, culture, society and economy of the Hittites (16 hours)
"The political testament of Hattusili I between politics and religion" (20 hours). The course includes the analysis of the ancient Hittite kingship and the history of the Old Hittite kingdom starting from the text that narrates the designation to the throne of Mursili I at the behest of his predecessor. Through the analysis of the text and the reading of scientific articles on the subject, the history of the ancient kingdom will be dealt with. Also aspects of the religion of the Hittites will be considered.
