Course Content
The debate on the modernization and standardization of Ottoman Turkish; the Kemalist reform of the alphabet and of the language. Introduction to the study of Modern Turkish Grammar; nominal, verbal and gerundive forms, analysis of the syntactic elements, introduction to the textual comprehension and of verbal communication. The genesis and history of the language problem and of the language reform in the historical and cultural context of the 1800s' and 1900s'.

Learning Objectives
Acquisition of elements of knowledge on the history of the modernization and standardization of Turkish language. Acquisition of grammatical competence B1, communicative ability A2. The course aims to introduce the students to the historical and cultural dynamics which lead to the formation of a “national” language and literature.

Teaching Methods
Most recent methods of teaching Turkish as L2 will be applied along with constant exercises and use of audiovisual material. Lectures and seminars are held by Prof. Saracgil and the practice of language by the Language Assistant.
Further information
The course covers the whole year. The lectures and seminars held by Saracgil are mainly in the first semester. The practice of language is distributed in both semesters covering whole year for a complessive 80 hours.
Type of Assessment
At the end of the year, beginning from the summer term (May-July) there will be an oral exam on both parts of the course. At the end of each semester (January and May) there will be a written exam of Language, for which on-line booking is not requested. The written test consists of a dictation, of grammatical exercises, of reading and comprehension, of translation to Italian of a text in Turkish and from Italian to Turkish corresponding to the level of knowledge the students acquired during the course.
The oral exam consists of two parts. For the first part the student is asked to analyse the syntactic structure of some of the sentences read in the text; in the second part of questions regarding the different phases of the Turkish language reform. For a successful exam it is necessary to show a sufficient level of preparation in all parts of it. The final vote will take into account the results in all the parts of the exam
Oral exam aims to evaluate the following items:
- The grammatical knowledge of Turkish standard language (40/100)
- The competence in comprehending texts and elementary sentences commonly used in Turkish (40/100).
- The skill to exchange informations in Turkish language on familiar and common topics (20/100).
Course program
Introduction to the Grammar of modern Turkish language; Phonetics and orthographie; The noun, adjective, pronouns, verb, postpositions, adverbs, conjunctions; Basic syntacs; Reading and comprehension capacities of simple text. Debates on language in the context of the ottoman empire in the second half of the 1800s'; Language and Turkish Nationalism; Turkish Republic, the alphabet change and the language reform
