The course will present a methodological framework of the discipline and an overview of the characteristics of mass media language.

- to provide specific cocepts of mass media languages;
- to provide the basic concepts and specific terminology of Italian linguistics;
- to develop essential knowledge of bibliographic and digital tools for the study of the discipline.

Lectures; lessons will partially involve the use of digital tools and its essential functions.

Attendance is required for at least 2/3rds of the course. No provisions and specific exams for non-attending students, except for part-time students (who must contact the professor at the beginning of the course in order to agree upon a specific program).

The exam is oral for all students, even those who do not attend lectures and exchange students (Erasmus and other programmes). The test consists of three questions on the following specific parts of the course: 1) methodological introduction and tools; 2) architecture of contemporary Italian language; 3) characteristics of mass media language. These three specific parts may be assessed by means of one or two complex questions which cover all the areas. During the exam, students may be asked to analyse materials discussed at lectures and made available through the e-learning platform.

Students must demonstrate sufficient knowledge in all three parts to pass the exam.
The marks obtained in the three parts are totalled to yield the final mark.

The exam is designed to test:
- Knowledge of the Italian language varieties;
- Knowledge of the various types of Italian linguistics tools;
- Knowledge of the characteristics of different mass media languages;
- Ability to use the terminology of the discipline appropriately.

The course will present an overview of mass media language in function of its specifies, with particular overall on contemporary Italian. Detailed analyses will concern the language of web, radio, television, newspapers, cinema, songs. Specific lessons will be dedicated to language of publicity.
