Course Content
The course, addressed to Language students, as well as Italian Philology and french-italian bilateral diploma in Theory and practice of translation, treats about translation of Eighty century french novel. The corpus will be thematically centred on "art in literature", in order to allow us to analyse formal and stylistic aspects as well as the historical and sociological context.

Learning Objectives
The course has four purposes at once: a) fournish students analysis instruments for translation; b) through the practice of translation allow students to empower their practice of formal and stylistic interpretation of the texts; c) through the historical and cultural context of the novels (Balzac, Flaubert, Goncourt, Zola), reflect on the situation of art and literature at the first industrial age; d) through the combination of linguistic and historical data, acquire critical instruments in the field of history of ideas.
Prerequisites
1. For students in Italian Philology: minimal proficiency in french (B1-B2), necessary for text comprehension.
2. For Languages students: standard linguistic proficiency for Master degree
3. For the double diploma italian-french in Theory and practice of translation: C1 proficiency in both languages.

2.Final oral exam
The final oral exam is divided into three parts:
a) Knowledge of eighteenth century literary culture (authors, works, historical contexts, history of ideas)
b) Discussion around one of the two critical works as indicated in the bibliography
c) Discussion around the subjects which has been treated during the course.
For each part, we will be checking the following proficiencies:
a) Originality and critical autonomy
b) General and specific knowledge concerning the different subjects of the course
c) Maturity of expression and language property
Course program
The course aims to conjugate two different analysis methods for the literary text, in order to allow different student types (philologists, linguists, translators and traductologist), to obtain a specific and a general preparation. In fact, we will be considering five levels of textual analysis: translation and traductology, formal and stylistic aspects, philology and etymology, historical and sociological aspects (history of ideas).
The main subject of the course is the novel about art and artists in the second part of Eighteenth century, especially in realism-naturalism age. The two reference texts (Gustave Flaubert, "L'Education sentimentale"; Emile Zola, "L'Œuvre") will be treated as well in a sinchronic perspective (i.e. under a thematical and historical-critical aspect, with special reference to the relationship beetween art and society during the first industrial age: the exemple of Frères Goncourt's "Manette Salomon" is of fundamental importance), as in a diachronic point of view. The two novels will be read in a strict relationship with earlier texts in which the social question of arts is central. Following Hoffmann's exemple, we will be treating the different aspects of art representation raised by Gautier ("Mlle de Maupin") and Balzac ("Le chef d'œuvre inconnu" e "Sarrasine"). Some other texts will be useful as documents for a richer comprehension of the social period: i.e. "L'Art et sa destination sociale" by Proudhon, "Questions d'art et de morale" by Laprade; "Le Peintre de la vie moderne" by Baudelaire, the "Ecrits sur l'art" by Zola.
Once the social-historical context has been given, we will be treating the linguistic aspects, namely semantical, etymological, stylistical, traductological. We will be comparing, for the two texts of our corpus, different italian translations, coming from different periods and social contexts, in order to appreciate the constants and the variants in the reception history which is, at the same time, a language history and an history of ideas.
