Except for part-time students, attendance is required for at least 2/3rds of the course.
Type of Assessment
Oral exam for all students. It begins with the discussion on the topic chosen by the student and then proceeds to the assessment of the general knowledge of the literature of the period, by means of several questions.
Students can give the exams of two modules both together or separately in two sessions. The final mark is the average of the two marks.
The exam is designed to test:
- knowledge and understanding of the contributions of authors, works and literary phenomena, that have determined the evolution of Japanese Literature.
- knowledge and understanding of essential concepts of Japanese Literature.
- ability to use acquired knowledge to argue questions, using the proper terminology.
Course program
The Course intends to provide the students with the fundamental notions of the evolution of Japanese Literature in the Nara-Heian period ane Modern age. It discusses in particular the important works such as Man'yoshu, Kokinshu, Genji monogatari (Module 1) and the authors like Mori Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Nagai Kafu, Tanizaki Jun'ichiro and so on (Module 2).
