Course Content
The course consists of two distinct parts:
Part 1.
The “journey of knowledge” in Italy and Europe in the forties and fifties of the last century. Radio broadcasting and local musical traditions.
Part 2. Toward a history of jazz. Recent musical experiences in “Modern Jazz”. Writing music, improvisation and performance.

Learning Objectives
In relation to the two distinct parts concerning the course, the objectives are as follows:
Part 1.
To acquire knowledge of the processes and outcomes of the “journey of knowledge” in Italy and the Europe of post-war reconstruction, and the importance of radio broadcasting in documentation and studies concerning local musical traditions.
Part 2.
To acquire the knowledge of the main musical experiences in the field of jazz and music of African-American origin. Acquire knowledge of the main improvisation procedures in the practices of the jazz and other African-American music.
Competencies: interpret the socio-cultural context in which the musicians act; understanding the evolution of ethnomusicological studies; understand the peculiar traits of certain musical traditions; understand the meaning of intercultural dialogue in the contemporary musical practices.

Direct class lasts three hours during three months, having continuous restort to sound and visual sources

Type of Assessment
The examination is oral. During the test the student must demonstrate: a) to know the arguments relating to the course program and to understand the main conceptual categories; b) to express their views with command of language and knowledge of technical terminology; c) to know the main elements of the grammar of music and the interpretative and analytical methods of ethnomusicological studies.

Part 1 (main course).
The “journey of knowledge” in Italy and post-war Europe (1945-1960). Alan Lomax’s travels in Europe. The "journey in Italy" of Lomax and Carpitella. Other great travelers in Italy and in Europe. Post-war radio broadcasting in documentation and studies concerning local musical traditions.
Part 2. History of Jazz: The main experiences of American and European jazz. Procedures in the historical events of jazz improvisation. Writing and extemporary invention: analysis of some experiences
