The novel on the theater: variations on the theme of the "seducing woman"
An anthology of the dramaturgical rewrites will be available for students on the Moodle platform, where the audio and multimedia materials used during the lessons will also be uploaded.
Indications on critical readings will be provided during the lesson.
Learning Objectives
The lessons will focus on the analysis of some eighteenth and nineteenth century literary texts characterized by the theme of the "seducing woman". In addition to the source texts, some of their modern and contemporary theatrical rewrites will be taken into consideration. The playwrights sometimes modified the plot very significantly, creating new originals. The scheduled texts will be presented in the historical-literary context in which they were produced. Students will be introduced to literary and dramaturgical rewriting techniques also through short laboratory activities useful to acquire basic knowledge, in order to fully understand the topics covered in class.
Educational objectives: The 72-hour course aims to:
a) Allow a first approach to the study of some narrative texts of the XVIII-XIX centuries and to some of their modern and contemporary theatrical rewrites;
b) Offer a wealth of historical-cultural and stylistic-formal knowledge, designed to facilitate the understanding of the narrative and dramatic text in its various aspects;
c) Develop critical skills by reading and analyzing the texts on the program, considered among the most representative of the French-speaking literary civilization of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as their dramaturgical rewrites.
1. Knowledge and understanding: The course allows to reach a deep knowledge and critical understanding of the formal and substantial structure of the narrative texts and theatrical rewrites treated during the lessons and allows to become familiar with the historical context , literary and socio-cultural of the French literary and spectacular production of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, up to the analysis of contemporary rewrites.
2. Applying Knowledge and understanding: The course develops the ability to understand, synthesize and propose critical analyzes of the source literary texts and rewrites in the program
3. Making judgments: The student will be able to establish a dialogue on the issues addressed during the course, making independent and motivated judgments and critically elaborating the contents introduced and discussed in class
4. Communication skills: The course prepares you to communicate effectively in oral form on the topics covered during the lessons, with particular attention to literary content.
5. Learning skills: Students acquire a methodological mastery aimed at studying Literature, different genres and other forms of expression connected to it.

Type of Assessment
The final exam will take place in oral form. The test will consist of questions relating to the topics covered in the program and in particular:
1 - historical-literary context taken into consideration in class;
2 - Specific themes and problems related to the recognition and analysis of literary genres and the production of rewrites in modern and contemporary times;
3) texts (both critical and literary) and other forms of rewriting (in particular the theatrical one).
The three parts will be verified with articulated questions, covering all areas. During the test, the analysis of what was discussed in class will be requested and the students' ability to move independently within the primary texts and material made available on the Moodle platform will be assessed.
To pass the test it is necessary to demonstrate a sufficient level of preparation in the three parts.
The test aims in particular to verify:
- knowledge of the basic concepts of the history of French literature in relation to what was covered during the course;
- the ability to describe literary phenomena placing them in the historical and cultural context;
- the ability to read and comment on the texts being studied with expressive mastery;
- the ability to use critical terminology appropriately.
The students must demonstrate that they are able to hold a critical interview on the topics covered during the course, possibly by proposing links between different works / authors and expressing themselves clearly and precisely.
The exam test score is attributed by a mark expressed in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a minimum score of 18/30 and a maximum of 30/30 with honors. In assessing the exam, the determination of the final grade also takes into account the following elements:
1) knowledge of the formal and substantial structure of the topics covered during the lessons;
2) ability to understand, synthesize and propose critical readings of the texts in the program;
3) ability to formulate independent and motivated judgments;
4) clarity of exposure
