Learning Objectives
The main aim of the course is to enable students to translate and interpret selected poems by means of a close reading of of the texts (in their original version).The texts will be read and interpreted with reference to the historical and literary background Discussion concerning the subjects covered will also be encouraged during the course.

The prerequisites for the admission to the course are those estabilished by the corso di laurea
Teaching Methods
The course combines formal analysis with historical perspektives. Close reading, translation and analysis of selected texts. We shall examine the elements which have attracted the composers, themes, figures, motif sequences and stile, textual structure, sources, symbolic significations, metaphoric correlaths, interrelatedness of philosophical thinking and poetic vision.

Course program
The course offers an introduction to some of the most evocative poems
about night and combines formal analysis with historical perspektives: many of these poems attracted the composers and were set to music. Close reading, translation and analysis of selected texts. Authors include Brockes, Klopstock, Claudius, Bürger, Goethe, Hölderlin, Novalis, Brentano, Eichendorff, Heine. Focus will be on changing perceptions of nature as responsive mirror of the soul in the different historical phases.
