The course introduces the discipline of anthropology, focusing on the issues of the division of roles between the sexes and kinship relations. Through the analysis of the history of the discipline and the study of the texts, we highlight the anthropological contribution to the definition of contemporary concept of gender. An in-depth view is offered to the work of Margaret Mead with the study of the two texts, Adolescence in Samoa and Sex and Temperament. The second part of the course deals with the roots of the feminist concept of gender, in the complex interaction between the demand for universal rights and the cultural specificity. In the last part of the course focuses the "anthropological mutation" of the current family. Anthropology has relativized the essentialist idea of the family; through the analysis of single parenthood, the historical making of the family in the frame of gender relations and trends of the present are identified.

Course program
The course will begin with an introduction to key concepts in anthropology, through the study of Levi Strauss, and Cavalli-Sforza, but also the reading of texts by Herskovits, Benedict, Mead. Students will learn the concept of cultural relativism.
The course will then focus on the analysis of the work of Margaret Mead in relation to sexual difference. Once established the importance of anthropology in the reflection on the social construction of femininity, the course will analyse the concept of gender as part of the feminist literature. Currently the concept of gender is one of the most crucial in the social sciences. Finally the course will highlight – through several examples- how the construction of roles and representations of femininity or motherhood are produced in different societies.
