Pre-Hispanic, Indigenism and New-Indianism Literature
(full program:12 cfu; it can be divided into two parts of 6 cfu each one)
The course proposes to go back to the origins of the Hispanic American Literature, that is when it was not yet “Hispanic”, given that Conquest had not spread, when the great civilisations of the “New World”had their own literature and writing. We will analyze Maya, Azteca, Inca, and Guaraní societies and their cultural works. After, we will study the XIX century when several writers start to understand the meaning of being a repressed and marginated Indigeneous culture. We will analye in particural two authors that dedicated to study this world: Juan León Mera, from Equator and belonging to the XIX century, and Miguel Ángel Asturias, from Guatemala and of the XX century, second American Latin Nobel Prize. At the end, we will focus on Indigeneous authors who between the end of the XX and the latest two ten-years have written in their mother tongue: the Maya quiché poet Humberto Ak’abal, and the Peruvian writer, linked to the Inca world, Gloria Cáceres.
