The course consist of two modules. The first one aims to develop students' knowledge in the field of language acquisition. The second module deals with the processes of the mother tongue.

Learning Objectives
Advanced knowledge of the scientific debate concerning the following topics: first and second language acquisition; input and input elaboration; acquisition phases; learning varieties and target varieties. Ability to analyze data on learning phases and varieties in an acquisitional perspective.
The extra-disciplinary goal of the course is to stimulate students to develop: (a) an informed use of the academic environment, the CdS, the assistance facilities for managing the student careers; (b) a conscious participation and an effective student-teacher collaboration; (c) an aware use of the learning resources provided by both CdS and Scuola.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge about general linguistics.
Teaching Methods
Lectures. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in presenting and discussing the results of specific studies.

Type of Assessment
Oral exam concerning the two modules of the program. The evaluation will assess the ability to clearly present and discuss theoretical notions as well as to apply them in data analysis.

First module: foundations of Second Language Acquisition, input and interaction, learner varieties, the role of age of acquisition and of source languages.
Second module: theories of language development; pre-linguistic communication; action, gesture, linguistic sign; developmental phases of lexicon, grammar and communicative abilities
