Learning Objectives
"Let's help them at home" is a very common phrase in the political debate of today's Italy. But in general those who pronounce it do not know who they are, nor where it really is "their home". Understanding who we are talking about is instead a fundamental process to understand us, and to do so we need to recognize the cultural heritage of "them". The course examines some aspects of the current Italian legislation on cultural heritage, developing in particular the analysis of the historical processes that led to their formulation and the forms of application of the legislation in the field. We want to insist particularly on the forms of perception and protection of cultural heritage of non-European cultures, who arrived in Italy especially at the time of colonial adventures. We also want to show that these objects helped to build an Italian national identity, even through strong ideological conditioning. But, above all, we want to demonstrate that the awareness of cultural heritage contributes to strengthening the dialogue between peoples and to resisting against violence and racism, which in times of great migration and of alleged "clashes of civilizations" are becoming stronger every day. So we also talk about how communities perceive and live this heritage. The aim of the course is also to show the specificity of the "Italian model of protection" in the international context and in its historical development. The course profile is therefore not legal in the strict sense, but rather historical-cultural. Some of the University of Florence colleagues and external scholars will be involved in the lessons. In the classroom it will also be projected and commented "Adwa: an African Victory", a magnificent documentary by Haile Gerima that tells the battle of Adua, and his memory, from the Ethiopian point of view. In conclusion, the course aims to provide in-depth knowledge on the protection of cultural heritage in Italy and on the laws that regulate it; but above all to stimulate reflective and argumentative capacities around the transmission of cultural heritage and around the dynamic processes that define cultural identity. The main purpose is above all to form a civil conscience that helps the students to become better citizens through the awareness of heritage.
